From a 14-Hour Whipple Surgery to National Recognition: Ebha Patel’s Inspiring Journey of Resilience, Rural Leadership and Empowerment
After undergoing the removal of parts of her pancreas, stomach and bile duct, along with her entire gallbladder, and facing a year-long absence of menstrual periods at a young age, the engineer and social entrepreneur continued her mission to empower rural women and bring AI to Gram Panchayats.
Lucknow, India: Behind the achievements of engineer Ebha Patel, Founder and Chairman of Ghar Ayee Nanhi Pari Foundation, lies a deeply personal journey of medical challenges, determination and dedication to grassroots development.
From undergoing a complex 14-hour Whipple surgery to receiving national recognition for her social initiatives, Patel’s story reflects the importance of perseverance, medical care, family support and a continued sense of purpose.
A Life-Changing Surgery at a Young Age
On November 28, 2024, Patel underwent a major Whipple procedure at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow.
The complex surgery lasted approximately 14 hours and involved the removal of a portion of her pancreas, part of her stomach, a section of her bile duct and her entire gallbladder.
During her broader health journey, she also experienced the absence of menstrual periods for approximately one year. This was another significant personal health challenge, although its medical cause has not been established as a consequence of the surgery.
Recovering from the extensive procedure required patience, ongoing medical attention and significant adjustments to everyday life.
Despite these challenges, Patel gradually resumed her professional and social responsibilities, continuing the initiatives that had become central to her life’s work.
From Recovery to Renewed Purpose
For Patel, returning to community service represented an important milestone in her recovery journey.
Through Ghar Ayee Nanhi Pari Foundation, she continued working toward the celebration of newborn girls, strengthening Anganwadi centres, promoting women’s leadership and supporting rural communities.
Her foundation has engaged with Gram Panchayat representatives across several Indian states, with particular emphasis on Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
Her experiences have also reinforced a message that she brings to her public engagements: personal challenges need not prevent individuals from pursuing meaningful goals, although every person’s recovery journey is different.
Bringing Artificial Intelligence to Rural India
With a professional background in computer science and technology, Patel has been advocating for the practical and responsible use of artificial intelligence in village-level governance.
Her initiatives focus on helping women Sarpanches and rural representatives understand how AI tools can assist with drafting official communications, preparing preliminary development plans, accessing information about government schemes and organizing administrative tasks.
She aims to make technology more approachable through Hindi-language explanations, relatable examples and practical demonstrations.
Her guiding philosophy is:
“Awareness informs, implementation transforms.”
Giving Grassroots Communities a Voice
Public speaking has become an important part of Patel’s outreach.
Rather than relying on complicated technical language, she uses simple Hindi and examples drawn from village life to discuss digital literacy, women’s participation in governance, education and community development.
She has contributed to Panchayat-focused programmes in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, including events organized in the esteemed presence of the Hon’ble Governors of both states.
These programmes have provided opportunities for women Sarpanches and other grassroots representatives to exchange ideas, share experiences and explore practical approaches to local development.
Recognition Beyond Personal Challenges
In September 2026, Patel received the CNBC-TV18 Future Female Forward ICON 2026 recognition in Mumbai.
Her initiatives have also been featured by The Better India and NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub.
Her work in AI awareness led to a nomination in the Best AI Content category at the Times Power Creator Awards 2026 in Mumbai.
For Patel, such platforms offer opportunities to draw attention to rural women, grassroots leadership and the potential of accessible technology.
A Story of Strength, Not Just Survival
Patel’s journey is not defined solely by the surgery she underwent or the recognition she later received.
It also reflects the everyday determination required to rebuild routines, manage health challenges and continue contributing to society after a major medical procedure.
Her experience as a Whipple surgery survivor is an important part of her story, while her work in rural development demonstrates her continuing professional and social commitments.
“A part of her body was removed, but her dreams, determination and commitment to rural India remained.”
As Patel continues her work with Gram Panchayats, women representatives and community organizations, her journey offers a message of hope grounded in perseverance and purposeful action.
From the operating theatre at SGPGI Lucknow to national platforms in Mumbai, Ebha Patel’s story is one of survival, renewed purpose and a continuing commitment to rural empowerment.
