Bangalore Consultancy Builds Free Tool to End the Biggest Guessing Game in German Admissions
For Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in Germany, a high CGPA can feel like the strongest ticket to admission. Yet many applicants discover a frustrating reality: even a 9.0 CGPA does not automatically translate into a German university offer. The reason often lies beyond grades, in degree equivalence and subject-specific eligibility requirements.
Recognising this gap, Bangalore-based study-abroad consultancy Reknown Edu Services has introduced the German University Shortlister, a free online tool designed to help students understand their realistic university options before spending time and money on applications.
With experience dating back to 2012, Reknown Edu Services has personally counselled and guided more than 1,500 students, contributing to an 8,000+ student legacy across Germany, the UK, Australia and Canada.
Why a High CGPA May Not Be Enough for Germany
German university admissions can involve two important gates. The first is degree equivalence, where an applicant’s qualification is assessed under frameworks such as anabin and, where applicable, ZAB. The type and duration of an undergraduate degree can therefore influence eligibility independently of academic scores.
The second gate is Fachrichtungsrelevanz, or subject relevance. German universities may examine whether an applicant’s undergraduate coursework sufficiently matches the academic prerequisites of the intended Master’s programme. This means that a student can have excellent grades but still face rejection if their previous coursework does not align closely enough with the programme requirements.
For applicants unfamiliar with the German admission system, this distinction can lead to applications based almost entirely on CGPA, followed by unexpected rejections and unnecessary application expenses.
A Free German University Shortlisting Tool
The German University Shortlister aims to make this process more transparent. Students can enter their intended field of study, CGPA and IELTS score, where applicable, to receive a shortlist across thousands of German university programmes.
The tool evaluates profiles against programme-level information and categorises potential options into Safe, Target and Reach groups. It also considers factors that can strengthen an applicant’s profile, including GRE scores, relevant work experience, published research and patents.
Another important feature is its approach to academic performance conversion. Instead of relying on a generic percentage conversion, the tool uses the Modified Bavarian Formula as part of its assessment framework.
Students can access the tool without first completing a contact form, allowing them to explore their options before deciding on their application strategy.

What Students Should Do After Getting Their Shortlist
A shortlist is only the beginning of the German study-abroad journey. Students should verify their degree equivalence and understand the APS certificate process before applying. Reknown Edu Services also provides resources covering the German APS process, DAAD scholarships for Indian students, living costs by German city and part-time work opportunities.
Applicants should also evaluate the total financial requirement rather than focusing only on tuition fees. While many public universities in Germany have low or no tuition fees for eligible students, living expenses, accommodation and financial proof requirements remain important considerations.
Built From Experience, Not Just Data
Reknown Edu Services says its underlying database draws from German university listings, programme regulations and publicly available admission requirements, with updates intended to reflect changing admission cycles. However, the company clearly states that the Shortlister is an estimation tool and cannot replace an official decision by a university’s Examination Board or uni-assist.
For students seeking a more informed starting point, the tool offers a practical way to move beyond the question, “Is my CGPA good enough?” and toward the more important question: “Which German programmes actually fit my academic profile?”
Founded by Pratik Jain, Reknown Edu Services continues to focus on helping students make more informed study-abroad decisions through a combination of technology and personalised guidance.
